The design of this rifle was influenced by a antique example by John Davidson, from the James River school. The cherry stock is trimmed in brass furniture. The barrel and lock have a silver gray tone. The entire rifle is finished with a aged patina to simulate years of use. Hand made and signed by Nathan Stephenson

The .50 caliber 42" swamped barrel gives this rifle a nice feel without being overly muzzle heavy. The barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares at the muzzle. The Green Mountain barrel is cut rifled with eight lands and grooves with a 1 in 70' twist for a tightly patched round ball. Green Mountain Rifle Barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained.

The brass patchbox flows along the centerline of the buttstock. The four piece patchbox with pointed head is similar to the patchbox found on a antique rifle by John Davidson. Steel screws retain the patchbox. The patchbox head features opposing C scrolls, and an engraved border on the head, door, and side panels. The wide flat buttplate would make this rifle ideal for a circa 1770 - 1790 impression.

Trigger reach is 14", ideal for todays average size shooter. Weight is 8.2 pounds and this rifle points easily due to the swamped barrel.

Image 3

Shown from the above, the flared thumbnail tang breech plug is surrounded by a raised and incised carved panel. The wrist is inlaid with a nickel silver thumbpiece with engraved border. The comb is offset from the wrist with a line of raised carving with a Fluer de Lis shape. The brass buttplate is engraved with a four petal flower.

A few tiny marks on the frizzen indicate that this gun has been spark tested, but it is otherwise as new. Lock panels flare slightly wider to the rear, continuing the architecture of the swamped barrel which is thickest at the breech end.

Image 4

No toeplate is fitted, and the buttplate extends a tiny bit past the toe of the stock, to protect this critical area. The attractive brass triggerguard has a long bow, to accommodate the double set triggers. This combination is often found on very early longrifles, and became popular again, on very late longrifles. The engraving pattern features a pineapple finial and alternating diamond pattern on the bow. The tapered lock panels have raised carved moldings that frame the panels.

Ignition is provided by this round faced Virginia flint lock, by Jim Chambers. This lock design dates from the 1730 to 1770 era. These early London style fowler locks are often found on colonial American longrifles and fowling guns. The pan has a bridle arm to support the frizzen pivot screw, not always found on early English locks. The plate has an integral pan, and the frizzen is tightly fitted. The lock has been finished with a aged matte gray finish to simulate years of use and exposure. The lock's action is crisp, and the lock sparks well. We recommend our 7/8" knapped English flint #FLINT-ENG-7 for best performance in this lock.

A Ampco vent liner is correctly installed in the sunset position, directly above the pan center, exactly as shown above. This stainless vent liner is our new White Lightning vent, with deep internal cone to bring the main charge very close to the heat of the priming flash, made by Jim Chambers.

The lock can be cocked, or the triggers set, in any sequence. These double set triggers, by R. E. Davis, are properly adjusted to fire from both the set or unset position. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. When screwed fully inboard, the adjustment screw disables the rear trigger, so the rifle must be fired from the front trigger, which requires about a four pound pull for release. It is wise to disable the rear trigger, when hunting in very cold weather. But the set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

The attractive brass sideplate holds two lock bolts, and fills the lock panel in Germanic fashion. Chamfered around the edges, it stands proud of the side panel surface. This Virginia longrifle has a classic square cheek piece.

Image 7

The square cheek is accented with raised carved scrolls on both sides. The stock has a hand scraped texture that is visible as it is rolled in the light. The cheek is inlaid with a large nickel silver diamond inlay engraved with a four petal flower and woven background.

The four piece patchbox with pointed head is similar to the patcchbox found on a antique rifle by John Davidson. Steel screws retain the patchbox head with the side panels nailed in place. The patchbox head features opposing C scrolls, and an engraved border on the head, door, and side panels. The door has a spring catch on the edge of the buttplate. Lift the latch toward the buttplate heel to allow the door to spring open.

This modest weight .50 caliber James River Virginia longrifle has the appearance of a well cared for antique. It will be a joy to shoot and own. Order it today!
