This fine quality replica flint trade rifle will be of great interest to western fur traders. A correct copy of the original pattern, J.J. Henry & Son "Steel Mounted Rifle". Trade rifles were traded in the early 1830 - 1840 period. Originally produced in Boulton, Pennsylvania, from 1827 to 1850, documented to have been shipped to the American Fur Company, this is a correct rendezvous gun.

Shown in The Peacemakers by R.L Wilson, also shown in The Hawken Rifle:Its Place in History #BOOK-HRIPIH, by Charles E. Hanson Jr., page 66. This is an extraordinary rifle, very well made, beautifully finished, and still unfired.

This well made replica is very neatly inlet, stocked in American black walnut. Polished bright the 36" long barrel by Green Mountain Barrel Company is cut rifled with eight lands and grooves in .54 caliber, with a 1 in 70" twist for a tightly patched round ball.

The butt view shows the English influenced patchbox with steel latch, which is released with a button just above the door. Depressing the button let's the door spring open. Very neatly inlet, this patchbox is retained with seven steel screws, all neatly aligned. The buttplate has the distinctive Henry shape. All the steel furniture is polished bright. Correct details include the incised line extending along the comb from the butt plate.

Trigger reach is 13-1/2" for today's average size shooter. This rifle weighs 8.2 pounds.

Image 3

The top view shows the buttplate's comb, an identifying feature of this Trade Rifle. Notice the square cheek, rather than the oval found on other J. Henry trade rifles. The breech tang is long, extending through the wrist, accepting two tang bolts from above, and terminates an a pointed thumbnail finial.

The long tang and two bolts, along with the long toeplate meeting the triggerguard, form a steel reinforced wrist. This feature is found on Hawken rifles from the same period, and was likely a feature desired by fur traders from the period.

Image 4

The bottom view shows the square toe with steel toeplate extending all the way forward to the triggerguard. Steel screws retain the front and rear of the triggerguard. All the screws have the slots neatly aligned with the barrel. Ringed octagon steel rod pipes retain the hickory ramrod.

Image 5

The L&R lock with double-throated cock has a strong mainspring, stirrup link, and fly detent, nice internal features. It is polished bright to match the barrel and steel furniture. Use our 3/4" knapped #FLINT-ENG-6 by Tom Fuller for best performance.

The double lever double set trigger is properly adjusted to allow the lock to be cocked, or the trigger set, in any sequence. Correct geometry gives this rifle a very smooth trigger release. Fast ignition is assured by the stainless Chambers White Lighnin' vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash.

Image 6

Two small sideplates are inlet into the wood on this fine copy of the original. The square cheek piece is another correct touch, copied from classic Lancaster County longrifles. The incised line on the cheekpiece echoes that on the comb, and a brass tube is mounted under the cheek, ready for your vent pick.

This is an extraordinary rifle, very well made, beautifully finished, and unfired. Made to be a shooter, this artistic piece of work deserves good care.
