This French flint longrifle by well known contemporary builder Jack Haugh is stocked in figured cherry, with engraved iron furniture, and a hand made flintlock. This elaborate longrifle is interpreted from a example built for Louis XIII circa 1636. The cherry stock is raised carved around the flared tang and ramrod entry pipe. The raised carving is accented with silver wire inlay. The hand made iron furniture is both engraved and chiseled. This rifle is used and does have a some handling marks, dents, and dings in the cherry stock.

The .50 caliber octagon-to-round barrel is thickest at the breech tapering to sixteen flats with a wedding band transition to round. A full 47" long the muzzle is shaped with a cannon barrel ring. The barrel is engraved Sic - Pransit - Gloria - Moundi. The rear sight is mounted 10-1/4" ahead of the breech, and a blade front sight is fitted 2-1/4" behind the muzzle.

Published in Contemporary Makers of Muzzle Loading Firearms by Robert Weil, this magnificent rifle is displayed on pages 130 to 139. Now out-of-print, this book is now highly collectible, too!

The cherry stock is shaped with a wide club butt shape that sweeps up into the lock panels. The wide flat buttplate is neatly fitted with excellent metal to wood fit. Silver wire inlay in the shape of a Fluer de Lis accents the buttstock from heel to toe. Difficult to master the wire inlay has smooth flowing lines. The hand made triggerguard is neatly shaped with a wide trigger bow, and long flowing grip rail the extends down the wrist.

The heel of the buttplate is shaped with a sweeping curve. The stepped tang is engraved with scrolls that flow into a Fluer de Lis over a spear bearing warrior and admirer. Silver wire "S" scrolls decorate the comb.

The flared tang of the breech is fully engraved with Fluer de Lis, and flowing scrolls, against a stippled background. Raised carving surrounds the flared tang of the breech. Curled silver wire scrolls extend from the carving.

Image 4

The toe of the buttstock is shaped with faceted panels. The toe has a number handling marks. Cherry is one of the softest of the hardwoods and tends to acquire marks easier than some of the other woods. The triggerguard is fire blue finished with some slight graying on the front finial.

Image 5

This hand made flint lock is finished armory bright. The flint cock, pan facets, and lock plate are neatly engraved. The lock plate is signed Haugh. This fine hand made early French flint lock features a hidden internal frizzen spring.

Image 6

This early rifle is shaped with a symmetrical buttstock. This early design does not use a cheek piece, but the front of the comb does have a shaped panel to allow for sighting. The wire inlay design is repeated along of the edge of the buttstock. This lower edge of the stock has a small dent above the toe.

The stepped tang is engraved with scrolls that flow into a Fluer de Lis over a spear bearing warrior and admirer. Silver wire "S" scrolls decorate the comb.

The flared tang of the breech is fully engraved with Fleur de Lis, and flowing scrolls, against a stippled background. Raised carving surrounds the flared tang of the breech. Curled silver wire scrolls extend from the carving.

The bulbous ramrod pipe has a Fluer de Lis shaped skirt. The stock is shaped with a small palm swell at the ramrod entry pipe and raised carving around the skirt. The fire blue finish on this pipe is a bit worn from handling.

Image 9

The chiseled sideplate is shaped with a serpent head and neck overlaid by a reclining nude woman and fruit bearing servant. Both lock bolt heads are attractively engraved.

Mr. Jack Haugh's longrifles are always a pleasure to hold and shoot. Well known for his craftsmanship. This is a fine example of a contemporary longrifle with hand made lock and furniture, neatly embellished and finished to high degree.

Now you can have a rifle fit for a King!
