AAH-629 Antique Double Shotgun, 11 gauge 29" fine twist barrels, walnut, repaired wrist, crisp percussion locks, marked E & G Hackett . . . $599.00
   In Stock, for immediate shipment

This antique double shotgun, circa 1850 to 1870, features fine twist barrels and very crisp locks. The locks are signed E & G Hackett.

The walnut stock has been broken at the wrist and repaired. The repair is strong, but no attempt was made to refinish the joint. If you are skilled at cosmetic wood finishing, you can dramatically improve the appearance.

The 11 gauge barrels have a .762" and .770" bore diameters. The bores have been cleaned bright with some minor pitting remaining. The wire twist pattern is visible on the full length of the barrel with the majority of the lightening from the breech the end of the forearm. The bottoms of the barrels are stamped with English proof marks and 11 for the gauge. The breech end of the barrels has some scattered pitting, otherwise both barrels are smooth and nice, no dents or dings. The ramrod pipes and ribs are securely soldered. The ramrod catch has been re-soldered.

The wedge key requires a firm push before it can be removed with finger pressure. This is apparently the original key, and it is captured by a pin. The barrels are easily removed due to the hooked breech

Stocked in European walnut, the stock has rays of figure from the toe to the wrist. The stock had a break at the wrist and was repaired many decades ago, by extending the tang and gluing the breaks.

The buttplate stands a little proud from wood shrinkage, but the other furniture is still neatly finished with wood and metal flush.

Trigger reach is 14-1/4" and 13-1/2" to fit todays average size shooter. This double barrel shotgun weighs 7.5 pounds.

This shotgun appears to have been stocked very straight. Lock panels taper to the rear, a classic English feature. Originally fitted with a short English tang. The tang has two brazed extensions to help strengthen the wrist. The hook-up between the breech and barrels appears solid, and the barrels are easily removed from the tang.

The bottom view shows the engraved steel triggerguard. Two wood screws retain the triggerguard at rear. The wedge key is surrounded by steel escutcheon plates on each side. The wedge key can be drifted with finger pressure, and has a capture pin to prevent loss. The ramrod entry pipe is broken with the front half missing.

The bar locks are engraved with a game bird scene including borders, and more elaborate scroll work on the plate and hammers. The plate is marked E. G. Hackett. These hammers have stiff mainsprings, and secure half and full cock notches. These crisp locks are designed to provide sure ignition, and fast lock time. The nipples are modern replacements and are well battered and in need of replacement. The right hand nipple appears to be frozen in place.

This shotgun has very shootable bores, crisp reliable locks, and the stock has been repaired at the wrist long ago. If not for the repair at the wrist, this double gun would be very expensive, and you might be reluctant to carry it afield. As is, you can enjoy shooting it without worrying about depreciating an original antique.

As with any antique shotguns we recommend remotely firing the barrels with your maximum charge to prove them safe.
