The unique style of Southern Mountain rifles originated from the Western Carolinas into Eastern Tennessee during the late 18th and early 19th century. This Tennessee Mountain rifle is stocked in maple and trimmed in browned iron furniture. Antique Southern Mountain rifles are often trimmed in iron furniture, with hardware store locks. This rifle is fitted with a L&R John Bailes flintlock and double lever double set triggers. This rifle is offered as used with a bright well maintained bore. The rifle is stocked with a 13-1/8" trigger reach, for an average size shooter. This trim longrifle weighs only 6.6 pounds, and will be a pleasure to carry afield.

The .40 caliber Colerain barrel is 13/16" octagon by 42" overall length. Colerain rifle barrels are drilled from solid steel, cut rifled with six “round bottom" grooves with a 1 in 48" twist. Called “radius groove rifling", Colerain eliminates the sharp inside corner that accumulates fouling. Radius groove rifling cutters are a bit more expensive to make, but Colerain's customers agree that the accuracy, easy loading, and easy cleaning are worth the cost. The bore is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. The flat top rear sight is dovetailed 12" from the breech. The brass blade front sight is dovetailed 2"behind the muzzle. The barrel is finished to silvery brown patina. A single tang bolt passes through the short straight tang to engage the trigger plate below. The barrel is retained to the forearm with three small steel pins.

The maple stock is finished to a medium brown with a hint of golden undertone. All of the iron furniture; buttplate, toeplate, triggerguard, and ramrod pipes are finished to the same silvery brown patina as the barrel. The buttplate has a deep crescent with a long pointed toe. We note filler has been used to fix inletting gaps on both sides of the buttstock near the upper portion of the buttplate. The bottom view shows the iron toeplate that has been surfaced mounted with two steel screws. The toeplate protects the fragile toe area, which is otherwise often susceptible to dents and chips during loading and cleaning. The triggerguard is also surface mounted to the stock with a screw in the rear and a pin up front. The forearm is shaped with a slender profile and no muzzle cap is used to protect the end grain of the stock. We note a 1-1/2" crack extending back from the muzzle end of the stock on the left side of the forearm. Two ramrod pipes and skirtless entry pipe secure the slender 5/16" diameter ramrod to the rifle. The ramrod is decorated with a barber pole design and is fitted with a brass tip threaded 10-32 for loading and cleaning accessories. The buttstock is shaped with a square cheek piece. A single lock bolt is mounted through a simple washer style sideplate.

Finished to match the barrel, the L&R John Bailes flintlock has a crisp action and a well hardened frizzen. This smaller lock is a fine London design, in the style of John Bailes, gunmaker. Locks of this design are found on English pistols, rifles and fowlers of the 1770-1810 period. More complex than the small Siler lock, notice that the cock jaws point directly into the semi-waterproof pan. The unusual frizzen flange fits and seals the pan, keeping priming dry. The well designed tumbler and sear have raised bearing rings turned around axles, to minimize friction. Lock makers sometimes call this a “frictionless" or “ghosted" lock, because you can see through its internals, if viewed sideways. When using our best 5/8" knapped English gun flints, #FLINT-ENG-5, the lock will throw a shower of sparks into the pan. Below the lock a set of double lever, double set triggers are installed. The triggers are properly tuned to fire from the set, or unset position. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. Fast ignition is assured by the steel vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
