Stocked in dark stained maple, this flint longrifle is trimmed in patina finished brass furniture with hand engraved accents. The .50 caliber Rice 42" swamped octagon barrel is mated to a Jim Chambers Golden Age flintlock. The bore is bright and ready to shoot. Offered in used condition, the stock and barrel finish have a few minor handling marks. Trigger reach is 13-1/2" to fit todays average size shooter well. The rifle weighs 8.1 pounds.
The 42" swamped octagon Rice Barrel Company gives this longrifle a modest weight, making it easy to handle. The .50 caliber bore is cut rifled with seven lands and grooves. The round bottom grooves are cut .016" deep, with a 1 turn in 66" for a tightly patched round ball. Rice Muzzle Loading Rifle Barrels are set between centers and milled octagonal, insuring a centered bore, concentric with the exterior, with no "run-out". Each barrel is stress relieved in an atmosphere controlled electric furnace, to eliminate work hardening or barrel warp, and to dampen harmonic vibrations or barrel whip.
After the rifling has been cut, each bore is "ball burnished". A carbide bore-sizing die is pulled through the barrel, to insure bore dimension uniformity, eliminating any tight or loose spots inside the barrel. This critical procedure leaves the top of the lands smooth and polished, equaling the traditional lead lapping procedure. Rice barrels are Match grade quality, with bench rest capability. Rice barrels do not require lapping or extensive shooting to break-in. The rear sight is dovetailed 11-1/2" ahead of the breech. A nickel silver blade front sight with brass base is dovetailed behind the muzzle.
The curly maple stock has been stained very dark, even though the stock is stained very dark, the undertones of the figure can still be seen in bright light. The stock shows a few minor handling marks from use. This rifle is trimmed in brass furniture engraved in a folk art style. The patchbox is shaped with a Fleur de Lys head, often associated with the Rupp family of gunmakers in the Allentown ~ Bethlehem region of Pennsylvania. The patchbox is hand engraved with a border and floral designs. The door is secured with a spring and catch, the door release is a button located in the toe of the stock. The top view shows the paneled flats of the brass buttplate comb, which mirror the flats of the barrel. The flared tang of the barrel is retained by a single tang bolt. The tang is accented with a panel of raised carving.
The bottom view shows the hand engraved brass toeplate with the button release for the patchbox as the center of a flower. The Golden Age style triggerguard is shaped with medium width bow for the double set triggers and a curled grip rail. The ramrod entry pipe is engraved on the skirt and the paneled body matches the two forward brass ramrod pipes that retain the 3/8" ramrod. The ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 threads to accept your loading and shooting accessories. An incised molding runs along the forearm from the entry pipe to just before the muzzle cap. A brass muzzle cap protects the end grain of the wood. An patina finished and engraved sideplate is mounted with two lock bolts. A square cheekpiece fitted with a nickel silver hunter's star is shaped on the left side of the buttstock. Raised and incised carving decorates the stock behind the cheek piece.
Ignition is provided by a Jim Chambers' Golden Age flint lock. Tuned for best performance the beefy mainspring provides lots of energy to assure ignition. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for best performance in this lock. The lock is finished to a dark blue with a light aged patina to compliment the finish on the brass furniture. The barrel finish has a rub mark from the frizzen just touching the barrel from over tightening the front lock bolt. Double lever double set triggers fire set or unset. The triggers do not have enough clearance to set with the lock in the half cock position. Fast ignition is assured by the vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
