Stocked in maple, finished with an antique patina on the wood, brass furniture, lock, and barrel, this early American longrifle rifle features a blend of English and Germanic influences.

The large wide buttplate and square cheek piece are of Germanic influence. The round faced lock is a common English design imported into Colonial America. Similar locks are found on surviving examples, such as a similar rifle by Johanes Faber show in our #BOOK-OSFP Of Sorts for Provincials by Jim Mullins.

This is a fine reproduction of a rifle which would have been used a tool for daily life during the 18th century. Signed by noted contemporary gun maker Nathan Stephenson.

The 42" swamped octagon Green Mountain barrel is .54 caliber with eight square bottom grooves and a slow 1 in 70" twist for patched round ball. Green Mountain barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. The barrel is finished with a smooth brown. The Germanic style flat top rear sight is mounted 10" from the breech. The front sight is partridge style iron blade with integral base.

We recommend our .490" pure lead round ball, patched with .017" Ox-Yoke ticking, lubricated with Mink Oil grease, or other animal fat lubricant, if you require best accuracy for target shooting.

This longrifle has a comfortable wide flat buttplate, probably circa 1750 to 1780. The sliding wood patchbox has a raised molding along both sides, with a bullet shaped head. Modest pressure can compress the patchbox spring toward the lid to allow the door to slide toward the butt. The stock is accented with a incised molding along the bottom edge from the toe o the lock panels. Additional raised and incised carving defines the transition of wrist to comb.

The swamped barrel gives this rifle excellent balance, and it seems to come up naturally. It weighs only 8 pounds. The trigger reach is 13-7/8" to fit today's average size shooter.

The 3/8" diameter ramrod is fitted with a brass tip threaded 8-32 for loading and cleaning accessories.

Shown from the top, this view shows the wide flat buttplate. The buttplate comb is stepped in English fashion. The comb is nicely engraved with traditional folk art scrolls and a Christian fish symbol. A raised and incised carved panel decorates the top of the lock panels surrounding the flared tang of the breech plug. The stock and brass furniture have a patina finish. The 42" swamped barrel is signed by the builder N. Stephenson on the top flat of the barrel between the breech and flat top rear sight.

The bottom view reveals the Germanic style brass triggerguard, with long grip rail. The triggerguard has a potted plant finial. The lock panels taper widest at the rear, a correct architectural detail for early flint longrifles.

The forend is slim and graceful, with a very slight Germanic palm swell just behind the ramrod entry pipe. A raised and incised carved Fluer de Lis design transitions into a raised molding along the forearm.

Ignition is provided by an L&R round face Queen Anne lock. This quality round faced flint lock design dates from the 1730 to 1770 era, well after Anne’s reign ended. The lock has a raised water-proof pan, We recommend our #FLINT-AMBER-7 7/8" knapped French gun flint.

The stainless steel vent liner is directly above the center of the flash pan, high enough to serve as a window on the hottest part of the flash. The flash hole is positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. The vent hole has been internally coned to provide good ignition. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

The single wide curved trigger has good leverage, giving this rifle an easy trigger release, and good feel.

The English fowling gun influenced sideplate is attractively engraved with a folk art design. Two domed lock bolts engage the lock.

The classic longrifle cheek piece is accented with C scroll incised carved designs. The cheek is decorated with a stepped molding. A raised molding is shaped along the toe from the rear of the triggerguard grip rail to the toe of the buttplate

This new rifle has the appearance of a well maintained antique. The lucky buyer will own a treasure that will last a lifetime, and his heirs will raise toasts to his good taste, far into the future.
