AAH-728 Antique Percussion Double Shotgun, 9 gauge, 36" twist barrels, walnut, back action locks, iron, marked Onion & Wheelock . . . $899.00

This antique double barrel percussion shotgun is stocked in dense European walnut. The buttstock wrist and forearm all have large proportions to accommodate the wide breeches for the 9 gauge bore. The barrels have Liege, Belgium proof marks. The back action locks are marked Onion & Wheelock. The right hand lock has been altered internally and catches the half cock notch. The left hand lock appears unaltered. This large bore double barrel shotgun was likely intended for use by a market hunter.

The upper rib of the barrel is faintly marked London and the twist pattern is faintly visible beneath the brown finish. The 36" barrels have .809" diameter bores. Both bores are dark with some scattered deeper pitting. The barrels have thick walls, .060" at the muzzle, so they could possibly be cleaned bright.

The English walnut stock has very straight grain. In combination with the massive proportions the buttstock is free from checks, or cracks. It does have many scratches, dents, and dings. The stock has been recently coated with a layer of finish. The wide tall buttplate was designed to spread recoil over a large area. The triggerguard is very similar to a early Hawken guard with the grip rail against the wrist.

Trigger reach is 14-1/2" and 13-3/4". Weight is 13.7 pounds.

The buttplate comb tapers and steps down to a narrow point a few inches past the heel. You can see the large proportions of the lock panels and wrist. The wrist has a long strap tang that is lightly engraved.

The barrels are fitted with a hooked breech to allow for easy dismounting and cleaning. Simply put the locks and half cock, drift the wedge keys clear of the underlug and the barrels can be lifted out for cleaning. The wedge keys is captured to the stock to prevent loss.

The buttplate stands proud of the walnut stock from wood shrinkage. The triggerguard is similar in appearance to a Hawken triggerguard, but is all one piece rather than a triggerguard mounted to a triggerplate.

The ramrod is a modern replacement and is much too small diameter. The forward most ramrod pipe has a dented front edge.

The back action locks are marked Onion & Wheelock. The right hand lock has been polished and then browned. The polishing has washed out much of the engraving. The right hand lock catches the half cock notch. The left hand lock appears unaltered with a aged gray finish, but crisp engraving. It functions correctly. Both nipples are heavily bent, battered, and appear rusted in place.

The left hand is side of this shotgun is symmetrical to the right hand side.

We always recommend that you proof fire the barrels, and carefully examine them before shouldering the gun with full loads. Fine original antique shotguns should never be loaded with modern steel shot. Use lead shot for trap competition and upland game hunting. Use the new Bismuth non-toxic shot for ducks and geese.
