This nice plains rifle was created by gunmaker George Nelson. In new, unfired, condition, the rifle is well finished. Stocked in figured maple, the rifle is trimmed in iron furniture all of which has been browned to a matte texture to match the lock and barrel.

This rifle is fitted with a .58 caliber Green Mountain straight octagon barrel with a 1 in 70" twist for a tightly patched round ball. Green Mountain barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained.

Image 2 Figure can be seen here in the rear of the maple stock. The stock has been finished an amber brown, to compliment the darker brown furniture, lock, and barrel of the rifle. The brown finish on the metal work has a very slightly textured feel.

Two wedge keys retain the barrel. Surrounded by iron oval inlays, the wedge keys are a snug fit in their inlays. By pushing out the wedge keys and removing the ramrod, the barrel can be easily removed for cleaning, a feature allowed by the hooked breech of the rifle. This is a nice ability to have on any rifle, making cleaning and maintenance much easier.

With an overall weight of 9.6 pounds, and trigger reach of 14”, this rifle is properly setup for today’s average man size shooter.
Image 3 Viewed from above the slender comb of the buttplate is mounted with a fire blued screw. Sweeping down from the hooked breech, the long tang of the rifle is matched below by the long triggerplate. The two sandwich the wood of the wrist between them and strengthen that weaker portion of the stock. Mounted with fire blued tang bolts. All the screws slots are neatly aligned along the tang and buttplate.

Located 8” forward of the breech a semi-buckhorn rear sight is dovetailed into the barrel. It is matched at the muzzle by a silver blade front sight that is set in a brass base 1-1/2” behind the muzzle. The top flat of the barrel is engraved G. B. Nelson.
Image 4 Our bottom view of the rifle shows the iron triggerguard and toeplate. The iron toeplate is retained by two fire blued screws and protects that delicate area of the stock when it is in contact with the ground. Not too far forward of the toeplate the iron triggerplate can be found moving rearward.

The long triggerplate of the rifle extends well past the triggerguard on both side. This long plate adds extra strength to the stock that, historically, made these rifles so popular on the Great Plains and in the Rocky Mountains.

Well forward the ramrod is retained by two forward pipes that are soldered to the barrel under rib and one entry pipe. The entry pipe sits just below a poured pewter forend cap, polished to a satin gray finish.
Image 5 Ignition for this rifle is provided by this nice percussion lock made by the R. E. Davis Company. The percussion lock works smoothly, it is well tuned, has a quick release and fast time assuring instant ignition when it is required. Browned to match the rest of the gun the lock is well finished. Use a number 11 percussion cap on this rifle.

The double lever double set triggers allow this rifle to fire from the set or unset position. We strongly recommend disabling the rear trigger, when hunting in frigid climates. Turn the set screw, between the two triggers, inboard, until the rear trigger is disabled. After hunting, return the screw to its normal position, and adjust it to make your set trigger as strong or as feather light as you prefer, within the limits of safe use. Cold numb fingers cannot safely feel double set triggers, in the set position. This rifle allows their use, set or unset, or disabled.
Image 6 The single lock bolt and tear drop escutcheon around it are classic features of a halfstock Hawken plains rifle, from the 1835 - 1845 era. Note the beavertail shaped cheek piece that adds comfort for a right hand shooter, while aiming this big .58 caliber rifle.

The balance point is behind the ramrod entry pipe, it will be very steady when aimed offhand. Rest shooting is ideal, since the weight absorbs recoil.
