This well made English sporting rifle is stocked in black cherry with a bright finished 38" octagon-to-round rifled barrel. Assembled by contemporary builder J. E. "Eddie" Brown this rifle's architecture, coloration, and finish were heavily influenced by the antiques shown in Of Sorts for Provincials by Jim Mullins, our #BOOK-OSFP. Not a exact replica of any specific example this well made interpretation features engraved brass furniture, bright finished round faced lock, and barrel.

Test fired to align the sights the .58 caliber bore is bright and clean. The large bore and 38" octagon-to-round barrel give this rifle a moderate weight and nice balance. The Colerain barrel is cut rifled with six deep round bottom grooves with a 1 in 66" twist for a tightly patched round ball. A English style brass blade front sight is dovetailed near the muzzle. A long base rear sight is dovetailed 9" ahead of the breech.

Image 2 This well made rifle has classic English architecture from the 1760 era with a wide flat buttplate to spread the recoil over a large area. Shaped from a blank the black cherry stock has a deep red tone with darker patches of figure. The stock has a smooth finish with a satin sheen. The neatly finished brass furniture design is influenced by a mid 1750's English military carbine. The brass furniture is polished bright with hand engraving.

This rifle has a 13-3/4" trigger reach to fit todays average size shooter. Weighing in at 7.5 pounds, recoil should be manageable.
Image 3 The top view shows the well fitted stepped comb of the English style buttplate, which in profile is a scaled down version of a Brown Bess musket buttplate. The polished comb is accented with a hand engraved border and floral design along the heel.

The thumbnail tang of the breech plug has a engraved border and the makers star marking. The tang bolt head in neatly engraved. The tang is surrounded by a raise carved mounding. The raised carving is well executed with a clean backgrounds. The carving is very nicely shaded to give it excellent contrast against the background.

The breech end of the barrel is decorated with filed bands. The top flat of the barrel is signed J.E. Brown between the breech and the rear sight. The rear sight is shaped with a long tear drop finial.
Image 4 Notice the flowing tapered wrist. The lock panels are gently tapered widest at the rear, a classic early feature. The forend is slender and graceful. The military influenced brass triggerguard is well finished with decorative engraving on the front finial and grip rail.

The barrel is served by a hickory ramrod fitted with a flared brass tip on the muzzle end. The opposite end if fitted with a brass tip threaded 10-32 for loading and cleaning accessories.
Image 5 The round faced flint lock, by Jim Chambers, provides reliable ignition. This attractive early English flint lock has a round faced cock and plate, and rounded frizzen and pan surfaces. The plate is shaped with a molded edge. The pan is shaped with a waterproof pan with a raised lip. Locks of this design are often found on American longrifles and fowlers of the 1730 - 1770 era. Sometimes called a Barbar, lock due to the famous early London maker in the mid 1750's that commonly used locks of this design. The plate, cock, and other surfaces of this lock are polished bright. We recommend our 7/8" knapped flints #FLINT-ENG-7. The curled trigger is pinned high to provide good leverage against the sear.

The stainless steel White Lightnin' vent liner is positioned well above the bottom of the pan and centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay. Study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.
Image 6 The English style sideplate is polished brass. Inlet to about a third depth, it stands above the side panel. The sideplate has a classic English shape with hand engraved border and floral design. The lock panels are very trim and slender with beavertail finials that extend down the wrist.
Image 7 The breech end of the barrel has decorative filed bands, with engraved border along the flared thumbnail tang of the breech. A raised carved shell design surrounds the tang of the breech.

This well fitted, large caliber, light weight sporting rifle is signed by contemporary maker J. E. "Eddie" Brown. In new condition the maker has test fired the rifle to align the sights. You will enjoy this fine rifle. Order it today.
