This Southern Mountain percussion rifle is used. Stocked in ash, the stock is stained to a dark brown and displays the grain pattern found on ash wood. The .45 caliber straight octagon barrel, percussion lock, and iron furniture are finished to a dark brown with a textured finish. This unsigned rifle has very well fitted parts and is very neatly shaped. This rifle weighs 7.8 pounds. Trigger reach is 13-1/4", to fit today's shorter to average size shooter.
The .45 caliber 33" barrel is 15/16" straight octagon with the muzzle end turned round. The .45 caliber bore is rifled with eight lands and grooves and appears to be the work of Green Mountain Barrel Company. Green Mountain barrels are machined from high quality American made bar stock, A.I.S.I. 1137 modified, stress relieved, annealed, certified rifle barrel quality steel. All barrels are drilled from solid stock, reamed to a high degree of smoothness, then optically checked for straightness. Very close tolerances are maintained. We recommend our .440" pure lead round ball, patched with .017" Ox-Yoke ticking, lubricated with our Mink Oil patch grease, or other animal fat lubricant, if you require best accuracy. The barrel exterior is browned to a dark textured brown. A tall flat top rear sight is dovetailed 11-1/4" ahead of the breech. A browned steel blade front sight is dovetailed 2" behind the muzzle.
The ash stock is well finished, stained a dark brown with a hint of golden undertone. The buttstock is shaped with a Southern style crescent buttplate formed from individual sheet iron pieces. The comb is a separate part, with a open stock below the heel and two individual toeplates to protect the toe of the stock.
The tang bolt passes through the stock to engage the trigger plate below. The barrel is retained to the forearm with a single wedge key. From below the iron toeplate protects the toe of the buttstock and extends until it touches the triggerguard. The triggerguard is shaped with a wide bow and narrow grip rail with curled spoon. The triggerguard is mounted with screws in traditional fashion. The rear triggerguard final has a small engraved heart with a feather hole. A single wedge key without escutcheon plates secures the stock. The forend is fitted with a browned muzzle cap. The wooden ramrod passes through two browned ramrod pipes and matching entry pipe. The 3/8" ramrod is well finished, with a brass tip at the front covering a ball puller, and the other end is threaded 10-32 to accept your cleaning jag or patch worm. The single lock bolt, and sideplate around it, are classic features of a Southern Mountain rifle. The square cheek piece adds comfort for a right hand shooter, while aiming this .45 caliber rifle.
The R.E. Davis late Ketland percussion conversion lock is shaped with a flint style flash fence to give the appearance of a late flintlock rifle that was converted to percussion post 1830. The lock plate is hand engraved with a folk art style scroll work. The drum is fitted with a 1/4-28 steel nipple. R.E. Davis double lever double set triggers may be set, or the lock cocked, in any sequence. Triggers fire set or unset, for target match shooting, or cold weather hunting with gloved fingers. This trigger is well tuned, with a light release, even when the triggers are not set.
