This half stock rifle has the overall lines of rifles produced in the Southern Mountain region of the eastern United States. This rifle is a blend of old and new parts. The maple stock has been refinished. The lock, triggers, buttplate, toeplate, and sights appear to be antique. The barrel assembly and triggerguard are modern replacements. A poured pewter muzzle cap protects the end grain of the stock. Refinished by Thom Frazier.

The original barrel has been replaced by a .50 caliber 15/16" octagon by 36" barrel. The barrel is cut rifled with eight lands and grooves with a 1 in 70" twist for a tightly patched round ball. The barrel has a smooth brown finish. The barrel is fitted with hand made antique sights. The rear sight is a low semi buckhorn sight dovetailed 5-3/4" ahead of the breech. The front sight has a low iron blade and is dovetailed 1-1/4" behind the muzzle.

The rifle is stocked in plain maple stained with a reddish undertone. The stock was antique and has a patch along the forend behind the forend cap. This has all been refinished with the muzzle cap. The handmade iron buttplate has a small brazed brass joint visible, a feature found on many antique buttplates.

Trigger reach is 14-1/4", ideal for a slightly taller than average shooter. Weight is 7.4 pounds.

The buttplate has a slightly tapered comb formed from sheet iron. The short comb is mounted with two screws. The breech plug tang has a soldered extension. A single lock bolt retains the percussion lock, a typical feature on most later percussion rifles.

The stock has been refinished and the toe was brought down below the level of the buttplate. This has left a fairly long toenail extension of the buttplate overhanging the toeplate. The iron triggerguard is a modern replacement. It has been finished with a slightly textured brown to match the antique furniture on the rifle.

This rifle has a unmarked antique percussion lock. A modern drum and nipple has been installed in the barrel. The antique drum was larger and the notch has been filled and recut to provide good support to the nipple. The lock has a very low half cock notch, just above the nipple. The half cock notch is not secure and it can be easily fired, or pushed out of this position with finger pressure. The lock panel has some small nails installed at the rear edge of the lock panel.

This rifle is fitted with a antique double lever double set trigger. The trigger will fire the lock from either the set, or unset position.

The brass sideplate inlay is inlet flush to accept the lock bolt head on the surface. Two nails secure the bottom of the sideplate inlay. Unlike most antique rifles the stock does not have a cheek piece shaped into the buttstock.

Assembled from a mixture of antique and modern parts. This percussion rifle has a new barrel with a bright clean bore, the stock has been refinished, and many small furniture items are antique. The lock can be fired from the half cock position.
