Henry Eicholtz Leman built his original Indian Trade Rifles during the mid part of the 19th century, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He also spelled his name "Lehman" early in his career. This replica is stocked in curly maple, with all brass furniture. The stock is highly decorated with brass tacks, as well as a engraved Cross of Lorraine. The large Siler lock has been cosmetically restyled to give it a correct late period flint appearance. Neatly assembled, fitted and finished by contemporary gun maker Mr. Ron Paul.

The nice quality .50 caliber 1-1/16" octagon 30-1/2" barrel is cut rifled for our .490" pure lead round balls. These Green River Rifle Works (GRRW) barrels were famous for accuracy, during the 1970 era of their production. Cut rifled with seven deep equal lands and grooves, and a nice interior bore finish appears to be well maintained. The barrel is fitted with a semi-buckhorn rear sight dovetailed 8-1/4" ahead of the breech. The steel blade front sight is dovetailed 3/4" behind the muzzle. The barrel is a rich warm chocolate brown outside, and the rifled bore looks nice inside

Henry Leman often striped his stocks artificially, painting the stripes with ink. This stock has attractive figure throughout the butt and forearm. This rifle was assembled in the late 1970's, during this period chromium trioxide was a popular stain. This rifle has a very slight greenish cast when viewed under florescent lights. The maple stock is oil finished to a satin sheen. The buttstock and forearm are decorated with a brass tack pattern. The buttstock is fitted with a pewter Cross of Lorraine. The cross is engraved with Christian fish symbols, and has a 1978 date engraved. The triggerguard has a large bow, with a single trigger.

This rifle has a 13-1/2" pull, to fit todays average shooter. The rifle weighs pounds.

When viewed from the top the lock panels are trim and wrist is slender. The wrist flows back to the tapered comb. The lock is mounted with two lock bolts. A single lock bolt was used on most Leman flint rifles. The breech end of the barrel is hand engraved with a number of foliage patterns and marked with the makers touch mark.

A short brass toeplate is mounted with a single iron screw. The screw slot is neatly aligned. The stock toe from the toeplate to the triggerguard is filled with a line a brass tacks. The triggerguard has a spoon like grip rail, typical of those found on Leman rifles. The triggerguard is mounted with pins.

This rifle uses a large Siler flintlock which has been heavily cosmetically altered to the appearance of a early 19th century flintlock. The lock plate has fire blue finish which has worn or aged to a silvery brown to gray. Inletting is far superior to most antique H. E. Leman Indian Trade Rifles we have examined. A single trigger is installed on the rifle. Correct geometry gives this rifle a very smooth trigger release.

Fast ignition is assured by the stainless vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

The cheek view shows the simple brass escutcheons surrounding the lock bolts. A classic Leman style cheek piece is simple and attractive. The buttstock is decorated with a brass tack pattern.
