This Colt Model 1878 double action revolver has a distinctive bird's head grip and was popular due to the similarity to the Single Action Army revolver. This model is sometimes referred to as the Model 1878 "Frontier" Double Action Revolver, and was listed in in the Colt catalog as Colt's New Double Action, Self-Cocking, Central Fire, Army, Six Shot, .45 Inch Calibre, Revolving Pistol. This 125 year old revolver has been has been refinished with a dark blue. This revolver was manufactured circa 1899 and qualifies for FFL transfer. It can be picked up by a Minnesota resident, or it must be shipped to a FFL dealer in another state.
The barrel length is 5-1/2" .Chambered for the .45 Colt cartridge, the caliber marking is on the left hand side of the barrel. The bore is bright and all the chambers are smooth. The top of the round barrel is marked COLT'S PT F. A. MFG Co. HARTFORD, CT U.S.A. on one line. Both the caliber marking and barrel marking are now fairly faint from the refinish. The barrel is fitted with a blade sight, and a notch in the frame serves as the rear sight. The thumb spur of the hammer is factory checkered. The loading gate snaps open and closed smartly. The bottom view shows the ejector rod and housing. The base pin has some bright spots on the finish from grabbing it with a tool that had teeth. Checkered hard rubber grips are a very dark brown, and the checkering has a few handling marks on it. The oval cartouche with Colt's rampant colt logo is embossed on the upper edge of each grip. The base of the bird's head grip has a swivel to mount a lanyard.
This is a piece of workmanship from an earlier century, in good condition. It should be fired with hand loaded ammunition. This rifle it qualifies for FFL transfer and can be picked up by a Minnesota resident, or it must be shipped to a FFL dealer in another state. Order it for a ten day visual inspection.
