The .54 caliber 8-1/2" octagon-to-round barrel transitions at the midpoint with a single wedding band before tapering round towards the muzzle. The bore is rifled with seven radius bottom grooves with a twist appropriate for shooting patched round balls. The bore is bright and ready to shoot. The barrel exterior is polished bright and a silver blade front is soldered 1" behind the muzzle. A flat top rear sight is dovetailed in the rounded flared tang of the breech plug.
The walnut stock has been stained to a medium brown and finished to a satin sheen. We note a 1/4" crack extending back from the muzzle end of the stock on the left side of the forearm. The top of the grip is adorned with a decorative brass thumbpiece that is matched in its general flare by the sideplate used on this pistol. The brass grip cap and triggerguard, as well as the single ramrod and entry pipe, are polished bright. The extensions of the grip cap that run up the grip are a common feature found on military pistols of the era. A single screw penetrates the center of the grip cap, securing it in place. The triggerguard is pinned into position in the front, and a screw retains the grip rail. The small diameter steel ramrod is fitted with a flared brass loading tip. We recommend our #PL-6-54 to service this pistol. The backside view of the gun shows the brass sideplate. Two dome headed lock bolts pass through the sideplate to engage the lock opposite, holding both lock and sideplate in position.
The small flint lock was assembled from castings by The Rifle Shoppe. The lock has been polished bright to match the barrel and the plate is stamped D DONATI. We recommend our #FLINT-ENG-5 for this lock. The steel vent liner is positioned directly above the center of the flash pan, high enough to serve as a window on the hottest part of the flash. If your flint pistol suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. The single curled trigger requires a firm pull to fire the lock.
